 A volcano has erupted south-west of Iceland's capital Reykjavik, the country's meteorological office says.


It says the fissure is about 500-700 metres long (1,640-2,300ft) at Fagradalsfjall on Reykjanes peninsula. The ultimate eruption there has been a few 800 years in the past.


Iceland has recorded greater than forty,000 earthquakes within the beyond 3 weeks.


In 2010, the eruption of every other volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, introduced air traffic to a halt throughout Europe.


But, the eruption of Fagradalsfjall is not predicted to spew out lots ash, so aviation need to not suffer disruption.


New Icelandic volcano eruption may want to have global effect

The Icelandic Meteorological workplace says the eruption of Fagradalsfjall started at approximately 20:45 GMT on Friday, and was later showed thru webcams and satellite snap shots.


A coastguard helicopter was despatched to survey the location, approximately 30km (19 miles) from Reykjavik.


It then despatched first photographs of the lava snaking its way down after the eruption.


"i'm able to see the sparkling red sky from my window," stated Rannveig Gudmundsdottir, who lives in Grindavik, eight km (five miles) from the eruption.


"everybody here is stepping into their cars to power up there," she said, in line with Reuters information organization.
